In 1980, for the only time in nordic skiing’s history, the Olympic races at Lake Placid were timed to the hundredth of a second and a race came down to that fraction of time. There were two racers that bested the other competitors on course by over 30 seconds, Sweden’s Thomas Wassburg and the giant from Finland, Juha Mieto. In the end, Wassburg prevailed. The hundredth of a second gained by Wassburg over the 15kilometers is estimated at equal a distance to 59mm. There are stories of the two cutting their medals and sharing them, though these are myths, likely created to ease our pain in feeling what Mieto must have felt. Tragedy. Indeed, Wassburg was willing to share, but Mieto wouldn’t have it.
